Our first days in California

If you would have asked me one year ago how my life will be in 2016 I would have never guessed that this December will find me in California, thousand of miles away from our hometown.

I never planned this move, but it happened and I hope we will enjoy the most of it! πŸ™‚

When I arrived from New York to San Francisco I really didn’t know what to expect. I never imagined this place and I didn’t have any expectations about it, so I was anxious to see how our new “home” will look like. After a week in New York, where everything was loud and crowded, I was surprised by the silence in San Jose.

I am used to living in a big city and the atmosphere here is completely different. I wish there were more people on the streets because I really enjoy walking, but I will probably get used to this new style of living.

What I like most about California is the nice weather. Compared with the freezing winters in Romania the weather here is amazing and I really enjoy it. I also like that I get the chance to meet people from all around the world who came here to work. It was really strange for me the first time we went to the playground and we heard children talking a lot of different languages, but I think this is a good opportunity for Bogdan to learn about other countries and cultures.

I am still amazed by the long distances between our home and almost everything else, it’s now clear to me that our life will mean a lot of driving and this is not really something I enjoy. I was also surprised by the fact that a lot of things are more expensive here compared to Europe because I always thought things in America are cheaper, but probably we just need to find some convenient stores for our daily shopping.

After the first day here, I feel that California is a place of contrasts: some things are better than in Europe, others seem much more complicated. I wonder how we will feel about this move in a few months when we will be to know the area a lot better. The first days in California made me want more to discover the whole area, to get to know new people and to start a new stage of our lives, in an American style. πŸ™‚

We plan a lot of traveling in the surroundings and I look forward to sharing our road trips here, on the blog. I have a lot of places on my list, but first I would like to visit San Francisco and see all the attractions in the town and also I hope to drive soon to the ocean, at one of the beaches close to our home. If you know other great places in this area I would be glad to find out about them, so I would be happy if you would share them with us.
