Family Time Calendar: April

I’m very glad that you decided to join us and try the activities in the April Family Time Calendar!

Here are all the details that will help you put the ideas in the calendar into practice.

Daily themes

 ⭐ MONDAY: FAMILY SHARING TIME

Start by inviting every family member to share the best thing and the most challenging thing about last week. Then invite every family member to share something related to the topic in the calendar. Each participant needs to either bring an object that illustrates the topic or a picture / drawing of it. Every family member has a turn to say a few phrases about the item they chose.

 ⭐ TUESDAY: READING

Every Tuesday focus on connecting through stories. The calendar includes easy ways to make reading more fun and enjoy books together.

 ⭐ WEDNESDAY: BUILDING

Using things you already have in your home (like LEGOs, magnetic blocks, play dough, paper, etc) build something based on the ideas in the calendar.

(The parent builds as well. The activities are not just for the kids.)

 ⭐ THURSDAY: CREATIVITY

On Thursdays it’s time to get creative! Using items you already have (crayons, markers, paint, etc) encourage every family member to get creative and put the ideas in the calendar into practice.

(The parent draws/paints as well. The activities are not just for the kids.)

⭐ FRIDAY: FAMILY NIGHT

Start the weekend connecting as a family by planning a family night.

⭐ SATURDAY: THEME OF THE MONTH

Every Saturday is dedicated to the theme of the month. This adds something new to each month and adds more fun to every week.

April theme: Celebrating spring

⭐ SUNDAY: OUTDOOR / ACTIVE

Sundays are dedicated to either outdoor family activities or active activities inside the house.

Details about the activities

You can find here all the details about the activities in the calendar, in chronological order.

1 – Sticky wall with paper flowers

How to prepare this activity:

  • Use painter’s tape to tape a big sheet of contact paper on a wall.
  • Prepare a tray with colored pieces of paper cut in different shapes: long rectangles for the stems, circles and petal shapes for the flowers, leaf shapes for the leaves.
  • Invite the kids to decorate the wall with “flowers” using the pieces of paper.

Kids can redecorate the sticky wall several times (as long as the contact paper is still sticky).

2 – Family night: game night with prizes

Gather a few board games and card games that don’t take too long to play (so you can play several games).

Before playing each of the games, invite all family members to come up with prize ideas, agree on something everyone would enjoy, and write it down on a piece of paper. The winner of each game will get the prize.

Easy prize ideas: choose the next movie for family movie night, decide the next family activity, a day without chores, late bedtime, favorite treat (to share with the whole family).

3 – Spring decorations

Invite the kids to decorate a small space in your home (a wall, their bedroom, a section of your living room, etc) with spring-themed decorations.

Work together to create the decorations and have fun!

Here are some easy ideas to try:

  • make drawings and display them in a spring-themed art gallery
  • create sun catchers using contact paper and tissue paper
  • make painted butterfly decorations.

The best way to enjoy this activity is to let the kids take the lead and let them express their creativity in creating the decorations.

4 – Play chalk games

This is an easy way to get activity outside and it works great for many ages!

One easy way to make this activity fun for the kids is to draw an obstacle course on the sidewalk.

5 – Sharing: your favorite spring activity

Invite each family member to a sharing time when everyone will bring a drawing or picture of their favorite spring activity. Then take turns sharing what you enjoy most about that activity.

(Use your child’s answers as inspiration for planning more fun activities together.)

6 – Read a book about nature

Book ideas:

7 – Build flowers out of playdough or paper

A way to make this activity more fun for the kids is to prepare an “invitation to create” using playdough and a few other supplies (a flower shaped cookie cutter, pom poms, craft sticks, buttons, etc).

29 – Make a collage out of old magazines

If you don’t have any old magazines at hand, you can use old activity books or even old artworks.

30 – Family night: Cozy fun

This is one of the easiest ways to prepare a fun family night. Create a cozy space in the living room using pillows and blankets and do something the whole family enjoys: reading stories, watching a TV show, playing a board game. Add your favorite snacks, get cozy, and enjoy a relaxed time together!
