Three weeks before my son’s birthday I started getting questions from family members asking what gifts to get for him. I always prefer to offer him experience gifts but I know that our loved ones prefer to buy him things and I wanted to help them choose things that my son would really love.
After a long online research and a few discussions with other moms, I came up with some ideas to inspire them. On his birthday he received some awesome gifts that he totally loved – some of them inspired by my list and others that surprised both of us.
This is why I decided to create a list of our favorite gifts for a 5-year-old boy to inspire anyone who might be looking for some awesome ideas!
Awesome gifts for a 5-year-old boy: Dig it up! Dinosaur eggs
If you are looking for a gift for a boy who loves dinosaurs this idea is just perfect! My son was super excited to discover the dinosaur eggs and this was the gift that he wanted to play with first.
My husband and I joined him in digging up eggs and discovering little dinosaurs and we had a lot of fun together!
The set includes 12 dinosaur eggs and an excavation guidebook that gives a few details about each dinosaur. I think that this is the perfect gift for dinosaur-enthusiasts like my son and has the potential of keeping kids busy for hours!
You can check it out here: Dig it up! Dinosaur eggs (recommended age: 4+ years).
Awesome gifts for a 5-year-old boy: My USA Interactive Map
This award-winning map was a great surprise gift that my son received from his grandparents. He loved it so much!
He plays with it all the time and I was amazed by how quickly he learned new things about the states. The map has different functionalities: Kids can learn information about each state, details about the climate, fun facts and other interesting facts.
It also has quizzes for kids to solve. They hear a question and have to answer by clicking on the right state. My son spends a lot of time trying to learn the answers and I’m very glad that he learns new things about each of the states.
The map also has a button that plays the anthem of the United States of America so in the last days I got the chance to hear it on repeat many, many times.
What I like most about this map is that it makes learning fun and can be a great educational resource for children!
You can check out the map here: My USA Interactive Map(recommended for ages 5-12).
I’ve discovered that the same company produces a World interactive map and even some Interactive human anatomy posters so I added those to our wish list for future gifts.
Awesome gifts for a 5-year-old boy: Zingo
Zingo is one of the games on our list of 10 best board games for preschoolers and it’s so much fun! We used to play it at a friend’s house but my son liked it so much that I wanted him to have his own game.
This game is a new edition of the famous game of Zingo. It’s great for kids because it has a unique Zinger device that little ones love to play with!
There are several versions of the game that teach kids different skills but I prefer the classic version. The game won many awards and it’s an awesome choice for fun family game nights! It’s not boring at all so you’ll enjoy playing it as well.
You can check it out here: Zingo bingo game (recommended age: 4+ years).
Awesome gifts for a 5-year-old boy: Magic Science for Wizards Only Kit
This science kit is recommended for kids 6 years of age or older under adult supervision. But my parents in law brought it for my son’s fifth birthday and he loved it!
The kit included 9 activities and almost all the supplies are included in the kit. You will only need to add water or other things that you already have at home. This is a perfect gift for curious kids who want to discover the science behind each “magic” activity.
The kit requires adult supervision for all activities but the experiments are very easy to put into practice and fun!
My son had another science kits before (like this Science Lab Activity Set for young kids) but we liked this new kit a lot more because it included all the ingredients for the experiments.
You can check it out here: Magic Science for Wizards Only Kit (or another similar set here: My First Mind Blowing Science Kit).
Awesome gifts for a 5-year-old boy: Magformers
Magnatiles have been one of my son’s favorite toys for several months now. After I saw how much he likes the magnetic building blocks I started to offer sets as birthday presents for his friends.
I offered sets to both 4-year olds and 5-year olds and they were a total success every single time! We have a few sets now and my son plays with them a lot more than with other building sets (even more than Legos).
His favorite set is the vehicle set because he likes to build cars but if you are buying Magformers for a child that never tried them before it’s better to start with the standard set.
You can check it out here: Magformers Basic Set.
One additional gift idea
Our favorite family board game is Sequence for kids and we love it so much that we offered the game as a gift to a few of our friends with young kids. They liked it a lot and it soon became their children’s favorite board game as well.
So I think that it’s a good idea to add this idea to the list in case you want to find a gift that it’s both fun and educational.
The game helps kids develop logical thinking skills and it’s a perfect way to introduce them to strategy games.

I hope that you liked these ideas and that they will help you find the best gifts for 5-year-old boys!
