Inside: Discover a list of 14 family Christmas traditions that will bring joy to your home this holiday season!
Every holiday is a great opportunity to enjoy happy moments with the family and I love to make the most of each of these occasions! One of the easiest ways to build more connection during holiday time is to create lovely traditions to follow every year.
Kids love these special moments and family traditions are a wonderful way to create those precious family memories!
Christmas is my favorite holiday and I want to make it special for my son so I looked for some nice ideas to help us connect and have fun! This is how I discovered 14 awesome family Christmas traditions and I’m glad to share them with you.
If you want to create nice traditions to enjoy every year with your kids, I’m pretty sure that you’ll find some great inspiration on this list!
Lovely family Christmas traditions to start with your kids
There are many ways to build wonderful family traditions but I always preferred to find easy ideas that don’t require spending too much time or money. I want these traditions to bring us joy and connection and not make the holiday season more overwhelming so I only picked traditions that we can easily put into practice for years to come.
I hope that you’ll like these easy and fun traditions as much as we do!
1. Create an Advent calendar (or a countdown calendar)
Children are looking forward to celebrating Christmas and a countdown calendar can make the wait easier and more fun!
I love creating a countdown calendar for my son because it reminds me every day to slow down and truly enjoy the holiday season.
You can either create a countdown calendar at home (we have this lovely Christmas countdown box that is very easy to create) or buy an Advent calendar (here is a list of great Advent calendars to inspire you).
2. Decore the house and the Christmas tree together on December 1st
Decorating the house on December 1st brings that wonderful holiday atmosphere in your home and allows you to enjoy it longer.
You can reserve a special evening for the whole family to decorate the house and the tree. You can make this even more fun by playing some nice carols and enjoying hot chocolate together.
3. Make a gingerbread house
I never did this as a child so I was very glad when I discovered this idea. I can’t wait to try it with my child!
I’ve discovered this Gingerbread House Kit on Amazon and it’s a very easy way to prepare this activity! If you prefer to make everything at home, here is a gingerbread house recipe that also includes a template.
4. Plan a Christmas-themed movie night
If your kids love movie nights they will certainly enjoy watching Christmas movies with you!
Kim from Thrifty Little Mom shares some nice ideas for a Christmas-themed movie night that can help you easily plan this fun activity.
5. Plan a Christmas-themed family game night
Game night is one of our top favorite family night ideas so I always prepare a Christmas-themed game night in December.
We play our favorite board games but we also add some special Christmas games. My son loves them!
One idea that is great for children all ages is playing Holiday Bingo. It’s an easy game that the whole family will enjoy! If you want to try this game with your kids, click here to download the printable Holiday Bingo game.

6. Have an indoor Christmas Campout under the Christmas tree
I love this idea because it’s all about having fun and connecting with the kids! You can put it into practice easily by inviting the whole family to a sleepover in the living room.
You can build a blanket fort or use sleeping bags. This idea can be easily combined with the previous two ideas. You can either have a game night in a blanket fort near the Christmas tree or you can get cozy in the sleeping bags (or under a big blanket) and watch movies until you fall asleep. Kids will love this!
7. Create a Christmas Eve box for the whole family
This is one of the family Christmas traditions that bring the most joy to the little ones! You’ll need a box (preferably a nice-looking gift box) and a few items that will help you have fun on Christmas Eve.
Here are some items that you can include in the box: matching holiday pajamas (see more details below), a stuffed animal, a special book, a Christmas movie, a pack of hot cocoa, popcorn, cute holiday socks for the whole family, a Christmas activity book, holiday stickers.
If you want to create a nice box for your kids here is a site that has a great Christmas Eve box tutorial.
8. Wear matching Christmas pajamas
I mentioned the pajamas as a great item to include in the Christmas Eve box but they can be a wonderful idea even if you don’t plan to create a special box.
You can find many cute matching Christmas pajamas here.
9. Create a Christmas tree ornament
Creating the ornaments is a nice activity to enjoy with your kids every year. Their creations will become great memories that you’ll cherish for years to come every time you decorate the Christmas tree.

5 more family Christmas traditions to try this year
Here are some additional ideas that we liked and that you can easily try with your kids.
10. Plan a Christmas photo session
It doesn’t have to be a professional photo session if you don’t want to invest in this. You can easily prepare a nice decor at home and take pictures of the whole family in nice holiday outfits.
11. Create a holiday bucket list
Write down a list of things that you and your kids would like to do this holiday season and display it in your home. It will inspire you to be more intentional and build more happy moments this Christmas. For more inspiration, click here to download a very cute printable Holiday Bucket List.
12. Go on a family drive to see the Christmas lights
As an alternative, you can just walk through your neighborhood and admire the decorated houses. To make this activity more fun for the kids, download this printable Christmas scavenger hunt. Kids will love to search for all the items on the list!
13. Wrap 25 books and open one book every night before Christmas
You can either use holiday books that you purchased in the last years (and new ones as well) or you can borrow the books from the library.
14. Make a paper chain Christmas countdown
This is an easy idea that will make the wait more fun for the kids. You’ll take off a ring of the chain each day and see how much time is left until Christmas.
I hope that you enjoyed these ideas and that they inspired you to start some great family traditions to enjoy on Christmas for many years to come! If you have any other traditions that you want to share with me I would be very glad to find them out!
I wish you a wonderful celebration with many happy moments with your family!
