Family Sharing Time: A simple way to connect with your kids

One evening, after a long day, I sat down at the dinner table, ready to go through the usual routine — eat, clean up, bedtime.
But before I could even take a bite, my youngest smiled and said, “Mom, guess what? I have something special to share.”
And just like that, the energy in the room shifted.
Instead of rushing through another evening, we slowed down. We listened. We laughed. We learned something new about each other.
That night, as I went to bed, I kept thinking about how much these little moments matter—not just for the kids, but for us too.
That’s what inspired me to adapt an idea from my son’s school and create a special sharing time for us to enjoy as a family.
And this month, I want to invite you to try Family Sharing Time, a simple way to bring more connection, more stories, and more joy into your evenings.
What is Family Sharing Time?
Family Sharing Time is a fun and easy way to encourage kids to open up and connect as a family.
A few times a week after dinner, you’ll pick a sharing prompt (using the printable prompt cards below), and each family member will prepare by bringing an object, picture, or drawing that relates to the topic.
During sharing time, everyone gets a turn to show what they brought and share why they chose it.
That’s it. No complicated setup, no pressure — just a simple way to add more laughter, deeper conversations, and special moments to your evenings.
How to get started
Step 1: Set up your sharing time jar
- Print and cut out the sharing time cards at the end of the article.
- Pick 12 prompts and place them in a small jar or box.
- Choose three nights a week for Family Sharing Time and let your kids know this will be part of your evenings for the next four weeks.
Step 2: Enjoy your first sharing time
- Pick a prompt card from the jar.
- Let everyone know what the topic is and invite them to prepare for the next sharing time by bringing an object, picture, or drawing that illustrates the topic.
That’s all you need to get started!

How Family Sharing Time works
Start with a check-in
Before diving in, take a moment to share the best part and the most challenging part of your day.
Sharing time begins
Each family member takes a turn showing what they brought and sharing why they chose it.
Wrap up and pick the next prompt
At the end, draw the next card so everyone can start thinking about what they’ll share next time.
Bonus idea: After sharing time, take a quick photo of all the items and the prompt card—a simple way to capture these special moments as keepsakes.

Why try Family Sharing Time?
Family Sharing Time is more than just an activity — it’s an opportunity to get closer to our kids.
It gives kids a safe space to share, be heard, and learn more about the people they love most.
I hope you and your kids enjoy this idea as much as we do!
