Some of the best ideas and recommendations that inspired our family activities were received from other moms who tried them before us. This is why I decided to start a monthly series on my blog to share with you some of our favorite finds from every month.
I hope that our ideas offer you some great inspiration for planning activities with your kids, trying new toys, discovering new family experiences!
Our favorite finds in June
This month’s list includes a hotel, a movie, and an experience to try with the little ones.
1. Apple Farm Inn – a lovely hotel in San Luis Obispo (CA)
I read about the Apple Farm Inn when I first thought about visiting San Luis Obispo, more than a year ago. So when we decided to go on a road trip to Los Angeles and stop in different locations along the way, I knew that I wanted to add this hotel to our itinerary.
The inn is absolutely wonderful: the rooms are lovely, the hallways are very beautifully decorated, the restaurant serves tasty food (and sweets), and their shop is full of cute things to buy. 🙂
The location of the Apple Farm Inn is also great because it allowed us to visit a nice farm nearby (the Avila Valley Barn) and go to a family-friendly beach that we enjoyed a lot (Avila Beach).
I hope that we will get the chance to stay at this hotel again in the future and spend more time there! If you are curious to find out more about the Apple Farm Inn, you can find all the details here.
2. “The Secret Life of Pets 2” – a nice and funny family movie
After my son’s last day of preschool, I asked him what he wants us to do to celebrate that special milestone. He answered that he wanted to go to a park with dinosaurs (close to his preschool) and to the movie theater. This is how we ended up watching “The Secret Life of Pets 2” at the cinema.
We chose this movie without watching the first part of the series so I didn’t really know what to expect. The movie was nice and funny and we all enjoyed it a lot!
In the meantime, we also watched the first movie (“The Secret Life of Pets“) at home and we liked it as well!
3. Our favorite family experience in June: Two days on the farm
We love visiting farms because B. likes spending time with the animals. But I wanted to show him what living at a farm really means: the hard work required to take care of the animals, the beauty of waking up early in the morning to feed the animals and enjoy their company, the close interaction with all the animals.
This is why I started to look for a place where we could experience some of the real farm life he never gets to enjoy where we live. I was very glad when I discovered a small farm close to our home that offers overnight stays in a tiny cabin located in their yard.
The Flying Pig B’n’b is located in the Windsor Family Farm in San Martin, California. We booked it through Hipcamp, a site that is great for finding unique camping experiences. We never went camping (because my husband is not a fan of camping), so I was a little nervous using this site for the first time. But it all went great!
The farm is small and cozy, the animals are friendly, and the host made our stay really enjoyable. She allowed B. to pet all the animals, feed them, and even spend unlimited time interacting with them. My son loved the farm so much that he woke up at 6 a.m. asking to go to the animals. He got dressed, went outside, and spent the whole morning with the goats, alpacas, sheep, bunnies, chickens, and cats.
We had an amazing time at the farm, and we would totally recommend you to try a similar experience if your kids love farm animals as much as our son does. You can find all the details about the cabin where we stayed here. On Hipcamp you can also find plenty of other amazing places located in different parts of the U.S. so I hope that you’ll discover a nice place to visit with your kids!
Bonus: A book with board games
During our stay at the Apple Farm Inn, I found in their shop a book that is perfect for trips with kids! It includes 5 board games in a book format which makes it easier to pack and use on the go. The game pieces and the dice are stored inside the book so you won’t lose them. The games are fun and great for young kids, so I’m pretty sure that we’ll include this book in our luggage for many trips from now on.
I wasn’t able to find the book on Amazon to provide you a link but if I’ll discover it anywhere online I’ll make sure to update this article and include the link.
Highlights of the month for us
I will use this monthly series as an opportunity to write down the highlights of the month for our family. It’s a nice way to keep an online family journal and share our experiences with you as well!
- We went on a road trip to Los Angeles and stopped in many wonderful places along the way. Our favorite ones were Zuma Beach in Malibu, Avila Beach in San Luis Obispo, and the Apple Farm Inn in San Luis Obispo.
- Our son had his end-of-preschool celebration on June 5 and his last day of Pre-K on June 7. It was an emotional time for all of us, and I still can’t believe that in August he will start school!
- B. started going to his first summer camp. It is a new experience for him and he already learned a lot of things that I hope will help him adjust to kindergarten easier.
- At the end of the month, B. started a new soccer season. This time the soccer practice takes places at his future school and I hope he will enjoy his new team and coach.
- We created a special summer bucket list and started planning nice experiences to enjoy together. Here are the things that we did in June from the list:
Go play mini golf. – We discovered a lovely mini-golf course named Stagecoach Greens in San Francisco.
Go to a special exhibition at one of the children’s museums near our home. – We went to the Dinosaurs’ Land of Fire and Ice at the Bay Area Discovery Museum in San Francisco.
Go bowling. – We went to the bowling alley several times this month and we plan to make it a regular activity this summer.
Have a board game marathon outside the house. – We went to a park and played our favorite board game the whole Sunday morning.
Go to an amusement park. – We spent one afternoon at California Great America and enjoyed the family rides. We also went to Gilroy Gardens where we had fun as well.
July has just started and I can’t wait to make the most of the summer time! I wish you a wonderful month, with many happy family moments!
