This month I plan to do a lot of musical activities with my child, so I searched for some interesting musical instruments for young kids that we could use. After some research, I ended up with a list of 12 instruments and we were lucky enough to find them in 2 sets that we have bought earlier this month. Now we have all of them in our house and they are really great!
If you are looking for inspiration in choosing musical toys for your kids, I’m sure that you’ll find some good ideas on this list. 🙂
The main rule that I followed when choosing the instruments was to keep them as simple as possible. Complicated musical toys can bring frustration for young kids, so I opted for a simple and playful approach. In the beginning, the best instruments for toddlers and preschoolers are those which they can shake, like shakers, bells or tambourines, so I mainly focused on them.
We bought these 12 musical instruments which were part of 2 sets that we found on Amazon (Melissa & Doug Band-in-a-Box and Innocheer Musical Instruments). If you only want to buy some of the instruments, you can also find each of them separately in online stores. I also found some great resources to create some of the musical instruments at home and I included here the links to the DIY projects.
1. Shaker eggs
These are great even for babies and toddlers because they are very easy to use. If you want to make some shaker eggs at home, here is a tutorial you can use.
2. Jingle stick
The jungle stick is easy to hold even with small hands and the kids will certainly enjoy the playful sound.
3. Rainbow bell stick
If your child loves shaking instruments, this colorful bell stick is just perfect! It can also help develop the kids’ rhythm and musical skills.
4. Finger castanets
This simple musical instrument is great for developing fine motor skills, as the child needs to clip the castanets to create a sound. Here is a tutorial on how to make castanets at home. It’s really simple and fun!
5. Mini tambourine
My son enjoys it a lot because it’s very easy to play and it makes a lot of noise. 🙂 You can also create one at home using this tutorial: Paper plate tambourine.
6. Triangle bell with sticker
This musical instrument is suitable for preschoolers and it gives them the opportunity to explore sound and practice their rhythm skills.
In my opinion, this is the best musical instrument to use with young kids in order to develop their musical skills. There are a lot of easy songs that kids can play using the xylophone and this is a wonderful opportunity to experience music in a more advanced way. You can also build a xylophone at home, but I find this a little complicated.
If you are crafty, here is a great tutorial to use.
These are suitable for babies and young toddlers too and they can be a lot of fun! You can also create maracas at home using only a few materials (here is an easy tutorial).
I recently discovered this instrument and it is really interesting. Kids can play it by using the mallet to scrape and tap the double bells of the agogo.
10. Spin drum
If you don’t mind having a lot of noise around you, a drum is certainly fun for the kids. A spin drum is even easier to use and the noise is not as loud as a normal drum’s noise. If you want to create a spin drum at home, you can find a tutorial here. I also found another very easy way to create a spin drum here.
11. Guiro shaker
This is another recent discovery and I like it a lot! Kids can also use the mallet to shake or rub the guiro.
I first saw this instrument in a children museum and I liked the idea, so I was really glad to find it online. Bogdan enjoys it also and he is fascinated by the different sounds he is able to create. Kids can play the kokiroko by twisting and turning the bendable instrument.
If you have any other recommendations of musical instruments for young kids, I would be happy to find them out! We really enjoy our collection of instruments and we hope to add new instruments to it!
