At the beginning of the year, I have started a parenting challenge to help me build a better relationship with my child, a choice that I am very glad about! I really enjoy it and I feel that following these monthly challenges allows me to focus more on my child and to do a lot of wonderful activities with him. The first month was dedicated to connection time, the second was focused on arts and crafts activities, the third was dedicated to books and stories. Now we just finished the month of music and dance and we prepare for our next challenge.
Before sharing our plan for this month, I will share with you the last month’s report to see how much of our last plan we managed to accomplish.
My report for April: How the “Music and dance” month went for us
I must be honest and say that last month was the most difficult from this parenting challenge. Bogdan has started preschool and he spends two mornings of the week there, so our schedule has become more chaotic. I still want him to spend a lot of time outdoor, so the time we had left for our activities was really limited.
Still, we managed to do a lot of things from our list. We listened to classical music, we played with musical instruments and we danced. 🙂 We haven’t created any homemade musical instruments, but I hope to do this another time. Also, we haven’t visited a music museum for children because I haven’t found one near us. We plan some family trips this month and hopefully will find a music museum in one of our destinations.
What I’ve discovered about Bogdan this month is that he is interested in listening to music. On the other hand, dancing is not really his thing. 🙂 He enjoys movement because he is a very active boy but I don’t think that he has any real interest in dancing.
My plan for May: The “Nature exploration” month of the parenting challenge
This month I’ve decided not to include any daily activities because I’m not sure that we will have time every day for them. Instead, I’ve divided the activities into bi-weekly and weekly activities.
– do activities from our Nature Activities List
You can find the list here, I’ve gathered there 13 nice ideas that we plan to try this month. Besides nature walks that will be a weekly activity, we plan to try each of the other activities. I’m sure that you will also find some inspiration on our list.
– feed the squirrels, the birds or other small animals around our house
We meet squirrels almost daily but we never feed them, so I plan to change this. I’m sure that Bogdan will be happy to interact with them. I also want to build a bird feeder with Bogdan! We found some nice tutorials to guide us and they are really easy to make!
Bogdan also likes observing snails, so if we will have some rainy days this month, maybe will get the chance to feed them too!
– a nature walk in a park or on a trail
We enjoy walking on trails and we have a lot of nice trails near us. We especially like the ones that are near the ocean. 🙂 Even if we do this often, I plan to be more intentional about our nature walks this month.
I plan to do nature scavenger hunts or color hunts to keep Bogdan engaged in the activity. I also want to use this walks for collecting supplies for other nature activities.
– read some books about nature (at the library)
There are a lot of books about plants, trees or nature in general, so we certainly find something that we like. We use to go to the library weekly, so it should be easy to include this on our schedule.
– day trip (or weekend trip) in a natural park
We plan to do a trip in a natural park to enjoy nature and spend a whole day outdoor. We haven’t decided yet about the destination, but we have plenty options to choose from.
– create a little garden at home
This is the most important project of the month. I plan to create a little garden on our terrace. I want to buy some plants, but also to plant some seeds. I want this garden to be Bogdan’s responsibility and to teach him to take care of it. I think that this will give him a nice opportunity to be more responsible and also to learn about the lifecycle of a plant.

This is our plan for this month, I hope that Bogdan will enjoy it! If you like the idea of a month dedicated to nature exploration for your kids, I would be glad if you would join us!
At the end, I can only wish you a happy month, with a lot of wonderful activities with your children!
