Inside: Discover a great list of children’s books about personal hygiene for teaching toddlers and preschoolers about washing hands, brushing teeth, and taking baths.
If you have a young child, you probably know those moments when you can’t convince them to wash their hands, brush their teeth, or take a bath without endless power struggles.
When negotiating and explaining over and over again don’t work, some nice children’s books about personal hygiene can really help you deal with these situations in a more playful way.
Every time my son refuses to wash his hands or to brush his teeth, reminding him about the books and the nice characters usually makes him more willing to cooperate and even glad to do what I ask him.
If you face similar issues with your kids, I hope that our list of children’s books about personal hygiene will help you solve them using a playful approach. 🙂
Children books about personal hygiene: 5 books about washing hands and brushing teeth
For each book, you will find here the official description of the content to provide more details regarding what the book is about.
1. Germs are not for sharing
“In childcare, in preschool, at home, and everywhere, toddlers need to learn that germs are not for sharing. Rather than focus on what germs are, this book teaches the basics of not spreading them: Cover up a sneeze or cough. Hug or blow kisses when you’re sick. And most of all, wash your hands! Child-friendly words and full-color illustrations help little ones stay clean and healthy. Includes tips and ideas for parents and caregivers.”

2. Brush, brush, brush
“Books feature simple, rhythmic text to read aloud to toddlers. Big bold artwork, photos, or photo illustrations make each book visually appealing. At the end of each book is a parent note with suggested activities linked to the story and its theme.”

3. Brush your teeth, please
If your kids like pop-up books, they will certainly enjoy this one!
“What child can resist imitating a chimp brushing its teeth back and forth? Or a shark that flosses every day? Youngsters will have lots of fun learning about proper dental hygiene in this delightful pop-up book.”
>> The book is available here.
4. Pony brushes his teeth
This book is great for toddlers. It contains a short story with nice illustrations, and provides a perfect opportunity to discuss the importance of brushing teeth.
“Pony learns how to brush his teeth by watching Dad.”

5. Germs are not for sharing
This book has the same title as the first on the list, but it’s for older kids. The story offers interesting explanations about why it’s important to wash our hands.
“Sneezes, coughs, runny noses, spills, and messes are facts of everyday life with children. And that’s why it’s never too soon to teach little ones about germs and ways to stay clean and healthy. This book is a short course for kids on what germs are, what they do, and why it’s so important to cover them up, block them from spreading, and wash them down the drain. Simple words complement warm, inviting, full-color illustrations that show real-life situations kids can relate to. A special section for adults includes ideas for discussion and activities.”

Children books about personal hygiene: 5 books about bathing
1. Time for a bath
This is a lovely book and it’s one of our favorites. The story is very nice and the illustrations are really cute!
“Spring, summer, autumn, and winter: bath time is all year round! In this follow-up to “Time for a Hug” little bunny goes through the year splashing in puddles, rolling in grass and dirt, dripping a banana split, doing art projects, and more. This sweet story shows young readers it’s OK to get grimy—because it’s always time for fun in the bath!”
>> The book is available here.
2. Pig takes a bath
This is another story for the “Hello genius” series, that shares a funny story about taking a bath.
“Pig has a fun time learning to take a bath.”
>> The book is available here.
3. Bathtime for twins
This is a nice book to read even if you don’t have twins. It’s more suitable for toddlers, but it can be interesting for preschoolers too.
“A delightful set of twins show what a blast bathtime can be in this playful board book. Expect grins and giggles from little ones as these funny siblings splash, have tea, play peek-a-boo, and more, until it’s time to say “good night.” Bubbly, rhyming text from Ellen Weiss and soft, charming illustrations by Sam Williams bring this playful story to life.”
>> The book is available here.
4. Bathtime for Biscuit
“Everything is ready for Biscuit’s bath—everything except Biscuit. He wants to roll in the mud and play with his friend Puddles!”
>> The book is available here.
5. Barnyard bath
“Here comes Barnyard Bath! It’s a waterproof cousin of Barnyard Dance!—the famous board book bestseller. And what could make tub time more fun than a book? Especially one that floats. Because let’s face it, board books are highly impractical in the tub. Safety-tested, nontoxic, and so much fun.”
